Galax is used by florists to cover up spots that aren't so pretty in a flower arrangement. After a while it became the main export town (then called Bonaparte, not sure of the spelling) and they named the town after it. Galax grows all around the Appalachia and is picked by locals. Some people argue because it is being picked so much the plant may become endangered. I found this leaf in my grandpa's woods barely a mile away from the town.
Note - I have also seen the plant spelled 'galex'.
